After many, MANY painful hours of trying to get Spore to work on my computer, I finally came across a fix after I was fiddling with an old download from Microsoft.

The rar file contains :

VCdRom.sys
VCdControlTool.exe
NS-sporeGA-DC.iso
readme.txt

Instructions :

Copy VcdROM.sys to your system32drivers folder

Launch VCdControlTool.exe

Click "Driver Control"

Locate the VcdROM.sys that you just placed

Click "Add Drive"

Click "Mount"

Locate the mini iso

Launch spore GA

What this does, is it sets up a temporary virtual drive much like CloneCD/Alcohol120%, and you then mount the mini spore .iso image in your VD. I found that using UltraISO, Alcohol120% and even my own DVD drive with a burned DVD to mount spore didn't work, but this did.

If you encounter any problems, you probably did it wrong, or need to redownload.
